Fire alarm and firefighting are two different systems

They are constantly confused, but they do opposite jobs. A fire alarm detects a fire early and warns people to evacuate — detectors, panel, call points, sounders. A firefighting system acts on the fire itself — sprinklers, hose reels, extinguishers, gas suppression. The alarm buys the minutes; the firefighting system fights the fire.

Why you usually need both

Many premises are legally required to have both, coordinated. The alarm triggers first, evacuates, and can trigger the firefighting response. A building with firefighting equipment but no alarm has no early warning; a building with an alarm but no firefighting means has warned people about a fire nobody can fight.

Both are inspected

Both fall under Civil Defence requirements, and both must be designed to pass inspection from day one — compliant components, complete coverage, documented drawings. Retrofitting either to pass after installation costs several times more than doing it correctly first.

The main types, and where each fits

Choosing fire alarm systems starts with knowing the types rather than the brands. Each type was designed for a different situation, and matching the type to the situation matters more than the price. The wrong type in the wrong place is behind most systems that disappoint — not weak hardware.

Before you decide

Ask for a survey before a price — a number given over the phone is a guess that changes on site. For this system in particular, confirm the design will pass Civil Defence inspection and that fire-rated cable is quoted, not ordinary cable substituted to cut the price. And ask what happens the day something fails: who responds, how fast, and whether the handover left you the documentation to let anyone service the system.
