IP or analogue cameras: the real trade-off

Analogue HD runs over coaxial cable, costs less per camera, and is the sensible upgrade where a building already has coax from an older system — you swap the cameras and recorder and reuse the cabling. IP runs over network cable with PoE, so one cable carries power and video, scales better, and supports higher resolutions and smart analytics.

The rule of thumb

For a new installation of any size, IP is usually the better long-term decision. Where coax already exists and the budget is tight, analogue HD delivers good results for less. Neither is simply "better" — the right answer depends on what cabling is already in the walls.

What IP demands in return

IP loads the network, so it needs a switch with adequate PoE budget and real copper Cat6 cable. A switch with a given port count does not necessarily power that many cameras — the PoE budget can run out first, and it shows at night when infrared illuminators raise the draw.

Choosing CCTV cameras starts with knowing the types rather than the brands — each was designed for a different situation, and matching the type to the situation matters more than the price:

Below the type, the details decide the result: component quality, correct positioning, and adequate supporting infrastructure. A mid-range choice installed correctly beats a premium one installed poorly.

Before you decide

Ask for a survey before a price — a number given over the phone is a guess that changes on site. For this system in particular, ask specifically about storage — how many days of retention this system actually gives, in writing — and for a night-time site check before you accept it. And ask what happens the day something fails: who responds, how fast, and whether the handover left you the documentation to let anyone service the system.
