Check the neutral wire first

Most smart switches need a neutral wire in the switch box, and many older buildings do not have one. The three ways round it are no-neutral switches, modules fitted behind the existing switch, or a new wire if the property is under fit-out. Have an electrician open one switch box and check before buying anything — the answer changes which products you should look at.

Switch, bulb, or strip?
