Structured cabling basics

Cameras, access control, intercom, attendance and phones all ride on the same network. When the cabling is done badly, every one of those systems inherits the fault — and the symptoms look like device problems, which is why money gets wasted replacing hardware that was never broken.

Installed once, replaced expensively

Cable is the cheapest component to buy and the most expensive to change, because changing it means opening finished walls. Use Cat6 with genuine copper conductors — copper-clad aluminium is the common false economy that makes PoE cameras reboot at random on longer runs. Respect the 100-metre limit per run; beyond it the answer is fibre or an intermediate cabinet, not a longer cable.

The rack and labelling

A patch panel, labelled ports and tidy management turn a future fault into a ten-minute job. A cabinet of unlabelled cable is a permanent tax on every change that follows.

The main types, and where each fits

Choosing networks and PBX starts with knowing the types rather than the brands. Each type was designed for a different situation, and matching the type to the situation matters more than the price. The wrong type in the wrong place is behind most systems that disappoint — not weak hardware.

Before you decide

Ask for a survey before a price — a number given over the phone is a guess that changes on site. For this system in particular, ask whether the cable is genuine copper Cat6 and whether the switch's total PoE budget — not its port count — actually covers your devices. And ask what happens the day something fails: who responds, how fast, and whether the handover left you the documentation to let anyone service the system.
