Large projects: what changes when the project gets big

A large project is not a small one multiplied by more cameras. Three things change fundamentally: the network carrying the system, the storage and retention period, and the handover and maintenance arrangements. Ignore any one of them and the project runs for a month before turning into daily problems.

Factories and warehouses

The priorities are gates, production lines and stores. Cameras need dust and moisture resistance, with licence plate recognition (ANPR) at truck gates to log arrivals and departures automatically. The real challenge is usually not the camera but distance: extending a network across a large site needs fibre planning and industrial switches that tolerate the heat.

Farms and agricultural land

Open areas with no continuous mains and often no fixed internet. The practical answers are solar-powered cameras, point-to-point wireless links between the perimeter and the recording point, and thermal cameras to detect approach to the fence line at night at ranges where infrared illumination is useless.

Resorts and hotels

Coverage spans entrances, reception, corridors, pools and car parks, with one essential consideration: privacy. Aiming cameras away from room doorways and changing areas is not only professional conduct but a legal and reputational obligation. Add a public-address system for announcements and emergency evacuation, linked to the fire alarm.

Hospitals and medical centres

High sensitivity: monitoring entrances, pharmacy, drug stores and medication rooms, with access control on theatres and intensive care, and evacuation systems tied to the fire alarm. Most important of all: isolate the camera network from the medical and data networks — the two must not share a path.

Banks and financial premises

Strict requirements: continuous recording with a long retention period, dual coverage of every ATM, vibration sensors on safes, alarm systems linked to a control room, and backup recording at a second site so the evidence does not disappear with the recorder itself.

Schools and universities

Coverage of gates, grounds, corridors and laboratories, attendance systems for students and staff, a public-address system for announcements and assembly, and access control on labs and stores. The administrative challenge is bigger than the technical one: who may view footage, and how review requests are documented.

Three items that are always missing from quotations

Storage calculated properly from camera count, resolution and required retention — not estimated.

Redundancy: backup power for the server and switches, a spare disk, and a saved copy of the configuration.

Handover documentation: a camera position drawing, a list of IP addresses and passwords, and a maintenance contract with a defined duration and response time.
