Smart door locks: what to check before you buy

A smart lock is judged on two things: whether it fits your door, and what happens on the day it stops responding. Everything else — fingerprints, codes, apps — is the easy part.

Will it fit your door?

This is the question that ends most purchases. You need to know the door thickness, whether it is wooden, metal or glass, the handing (which side the hinges are on and which way it opens), and the existing lock cut-out. Egyptian metal security doors in particular often have a lock case that a generic smart lock will not replace without machining. Measure and photograph the existing lock before ordering anything.

Lock formats

• Mortise smart locks: replace the whole lock body — the strongest option and the standard for main entrance doors.
• Rim locks: mount on the inside face of the door, easier to fit and popular for retrofits.
• Smart deadbolts: replace only the deadbolt while keeping the existing handle — the least invasive option.
• Cylinder replacements: swap the cylinder alone, the quickest upgrade for a rented property.

Opening methods — and always keep two

Fingerprint, PIN code, card, app and mechanical key are the usual set. The practical rule is to keep at least two independent methods active, and to make sure one of them works with no power and no phone. A lock whose only route in is an app is a lock that will eventually leave someone outside their own home.

Batteries: ask the two questions that matter

How long do the batteries last in normal use, and what warns you before they die? A good lock warns for days or weeks with a beep or an app alert. Equally important is the emergency power port — a contact on the outside face that lets you power the lock from a phone power bank to open it after a flat battery. Confirm this exists; it is the difference between an inconvenience and a locksmith.

Privacy and security in practice

Prefer locks that store fingerprints inside the lock rather than on an external server. Change the default administrator code immediately — an unchanged factory code is the most common real-world weakness. And for shared and rental use, look for temporary and one-time codes that expire on their own instead of handing out a permanent code you then have to remember to delete.

Where smart locks genuinely earn their place

Rental apartments with changing guests, offices with staff turnover, doors shared between family members, and anyone tired of copying keys. For a door that only ever admits the same two people, a good mechanical lock is still an entirely rational choice.
