Burglar alarm systems: how they work and how to avoid false alarms

A burglar alarm complements CCTV rather than replacing it: the camera records what happened, the alarm stops it happening at all through sound and an instant notification. Most break-ins end in the first seconds after a loud siren, because an intruder works on the assumption of being neither seen nor heard.

System components

  • Control panel: the brain that receives from the sensors and decides.
  • Keypad: for arming and disarming, best mounted out of sight from outside.
  • Sensors: motion, door and window contacts, glass break and vibration.
  • Indoor and outdoor sirens; the outdoor one in a metal housing with its own battery so cutting the wire cannot silence it.
  • Communicator over GSM or network that pushes an alert to a phone app.

Sensor types and when to use each

PIR motion sensors read moving heat and form the backbone of any system. Dual-technology sensors combine infrared with microwave and only alarm when both agree, which is the practical answer for places prone to false alarms. Door and window contacts are cheap, reliable, and give you perimeter protection before anyone is inside. Glass-break sensors are essential for shopfronts. Vibration sensors suit safes and ATMs.

False alarms: the real causes in Egypt

False alarms are the number one reason people disable their own systems. The recurring causes are well known: air-conditioning airflow aimed straight at a motion sensor, direct sunlight through a window facing the sensor, cats and dogs — solved by a pet-immune sensor rated to a certain weight — insects getting inside the sensor body, and weak batteries in wireless devices. Most of these are avoided by correct mounting, not by a more expensive device.

Wired or wireless?

Wired is more robust, needs less maintenance and has no batteries, and it is the natural choice while a place is still being finished. Wireless is faster and does not damage finished décor, which makes it the sensible option for an already furnished property, but it needs periodic battery changes and signal-level monitoring.

Partitions

A feature many people overlook: part of the site can be armed while another part stays active. A practical example in villas is arming the ground floor and garden at night while the family sleeps upstairs. In shops, arming the stockroom during normal trading hours.
