The smart home: where to start and what is actually worth it

A smart home is not a single purchase; it is a system you build in stages. The first decision is not which device to buy but which protocol to build on — because that determines what you can still add two years from now.

Protocols: the practical differences

Wi-Fi is the easiest start and needs no hub, but every device takes an address on the router, and dozens of devices on an ordinary home router mean slowdowns and dropouts. Zigbee and Z-Wave need a gateway, but every mains-powered device also acts as a repeater, so coverage improves as you add devices instead of degrading — the decisive difference in large apartments and villas. KNX is wired, professional and expensive, and belongs in large projects that need absolute stability and a long service life.

The neutral wire problem in Egyptian buildings

This is the surprise most people hit. Most smart switches need a neutral wire in the switch box, and many older Egyptian buildings simply do not have one. There are three ways round it: switches that work without neutral (fewer options), small modules fitted behind the existing switch in the ceiling-rose box, or pulling a new wire if the property is still being finished. Have an electrician open one switch box and check before you buy anything.

What is worth starting with

• Lighting: the highest day-to-day payoff, plus motion-triggered lights in corridors and bathrooms.
• Air conditioning and IR appliances: one IR blaster controls the AC and TV for very little money.
• Motorised curtains: relatively expensive but the change you feel most.
• Leak and smoke sensors: the cheapest items and the ones that protect property most.
• Smart locks and intercom: practical integration with the rest of the system.

Power and internet outages

A key question before buying: does the system work locally? Systems that route every command through an external server stop completely when the internet drops. Systems that keep the automation logic inside a local hub keep running. And whatever the system, the manual switch must keep working — the lights should never depend on an app opening.

Voice control

Most voice assistants work very well in English; Arabic support is weaker and limited to simple commands. If Arabic voice control is a priority for you, test it in practice before building the whole system around it.
